On the afternoon of July 11, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu spoke highly of China-Mauritius traditional friendship and cooperative relations, saying the friendship between the two peoples goes back to ancient times. Bilateral ties have witnessed sound, smooth development with continually expanded exchanges and cooperation in all areas since the establishment of diplomatic ties 35 years ago. The two countries have cooperated on regional and international issues, Hu said, expressing his appreciation for Mauritius government's long-term adherence to the one-China policy and precious support on the Taiwan question. Hu also thanked the Mauritius government for always attaching importance to ties with China.

Hu highlighted the role Mauritius plays in east Africa and in the Indian Ocean area, noting that China values its ties with Mauritius and hopes to maintain high-level exchanges and further bilateral cooperation in trade and technological fields to achieve mutual benefits and common development. He also pledged that China will continue to consult and coordinate with Mauritius in multilateral areas and on significant issues of common concern in a bid to maintain common interests of developing nations. "I hope the two sides make concerted efforts to earnestly implement the consensus reached by both countries and push the new type of partnership of mutual benefit and all-round cooperation to a new level", the Chinese president noted.

Agreeing upon Hu's views on bilateral relations, Ramgoolam expressed gratitude for China's long-term support and unselfish assistance to Mauritius. Despite the distance keeping the two countries apart, Mauritius and China share a time-honored friendship and have been developing bilateral relations on the basis of the one-China policy, Ramgoolam said, pledging his government would seek to boost cooperation with China in various fields.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and other officials attended the meeting.
