On February 16, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao wrapped up his two-day state visit to Tanzania and left Dar es Salaam for Mauritius to continue his five-nation "journey of friendship and cooperation".

In Dar es Salaam, Hu held talks with Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete and met Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume to exchange views on bilateral ties, the implementation of the measures announced at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the global financial crisis.

During their talks, Hu said China would like to consolidate its traditional friendship with Tanzania and deepen practical cooperation with the east African country to push the friendly cooperative relations to a higher level and jointly open up a bright future for bilateral ties.

Kikwete, for his part, said Tanzania and China enjoy a special relationship, which was created by the older generations of leaders of both countries. Tanzania will strengthen its cooperation with China in trade, investment, finance, agriculture, education, health and infrastructure in the new situation.

Hu also attended the completion ceremony of Tanzania's state stadium and paid tribute to a cemetery for Chinese experts who worked and died in Tanzania. At a welcoming rally in the capital, the Chinese president delivered a key-note speech.

Tanzania is the fourth leg of Hu's five-nation journey of friendship and cooperation, which will also take him to Mauritius. Before Tanzania, Hu had already visited Saudi Arabia, Mali and Senegal.
