Wang Yi: Roll up Sleeves to Work Solidly for Africa's Self-Development

2016-02-06 09:50

On February 5, 2016 local time, upon the conclusion of the official visits to Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique and Namibia, Foreign Minister Wang Yi gave an interview to the media, talking about his views on the visit to Africa.

Wang Yi said that the Chinese diplomacy enjoys a good tradition. Foreign Ministers always pay their first foreign visits to Africa every year and the practice has lasted for 20 years. They will stick to it in the future. It is not a simple protocol arrangement but constant signals to the world that China attaches great importance to the position and role of Africa, always considers the developing countries as the foundation of the Chinese diplomacy and takes Africa as the foundation of the foundation. However strong China will become, we will stand together with African countries as always and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries.

Wang Yi said that the four countries visited have their own features and are varied in natural endowment, development phases and population size. But all in all, they have one in common that leaders, citizens and media in the four countries all speak highly of the fruitful achievements achieved by the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) lately, highly appreciate the ten major China-Africa cooperation plans proposed by President Xi Jinping at the meeting and are all eager to get involved in the plans to deepen the bilateral mutually-beneficial cooperation. We visit Africa at the beginning of the year so that we can connect to the African countries at the earliest time possible, and turn the ten major plans into the tangible cooperation with each country and transform as soon as possible the high political trust with the four and other African countries into the impetus to mutually beneficial cooperation.

Wang Yi said that in accordance with the different national conditions, requirements and development strategies of the four countries and China's general policy towards Africa, we discuss with each country to decide the basic ideas, key fields and specific projects in the next stage of bilateral cooperation. The four countries are all satisfied and believe China's contribution is to the point and conforms to their actual needs.

Wang Yi said that the current economic downturn and the falling price of the resource products influence African countries a lot, which makes it more pressing and necessary to accelerate the implementation of the ten major China-Africa cooperation plans. The core of the plans is to help Africa speed up its industrialization process, realize diversified development, improve its capacity to develop independently and to deal with the international economic pressure so as to get out of the long-lasting difficulty of being subject to the fluctuation of resource products price. This is an approach to help Africa fundamentally. More and more African countries have realized the point and are eager to strengthen the production capacity cooperation with China. With regard to this, we have reached many important consensus with the four countries.

Wang Yi said that some international media released the news in the previous stage that Africa has been influenced by the Chinese economy slowdown. In the contact with the African friends, we haven't heard any voice like that. Instead, we get their appreciation of China's sincerity and achievements in its cooperation with Africa. President Hage Geingob of Namibia is the last leader I met among the countries. President Geingob publicly denounced the so-called "new colonialism"of China at the FOCAC Johannesburg Summit. He affirmatively announced that Africa has gained independence and could choose independently its own ideal cooperation partner. The partner is China. President Geingob told me that during the African Union Summit a few days ago, the African leaders talked about the achievements of the Johannesburg Summit and believed that the cooperation between China and Africa is down-to-earth, visible and tangible. China shows that it is the real friend of Africa through actions rather than words.

Wang Yi said that both China and African countries are developing countries. Reinforcing China-Africa unity and cooperation has gone beyond the economic scope and will make the world grow in a more fair, balanced, harmonious and comprehensive way. Instead of making sarcastic comments on the China-Africa cooperation, it is better to join us and roll up sleeves to make solid efforts to help Africa get rid of poverty and enhance the capacity of self-development.
