On August 20, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in Shanghai with Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe, who is here for the National Pavilion Day of Togo at the World Expo.

Yang said that China and Togo share profound traditional friendship. Bilateral relations have entered a new phase of rapid development in recent years with fruitful cooperation in politics, economy and culture. Yang appreciated Togo's adherence to the one-China policy and thanked for Togo’s active participation in the World Expo. China attaches great importance to ties with Togo and is ready to further enhance friendly exchanges, strengthen political mutual trust and expand the scale of economic and trade cooperation. China is also ready to actively advance humanities exchanges, consolidate and develop traditional friendship with Togo. Yang urged both sides to keep closer coordination on international affairs and support each other on issues concerning their core interests so as to push bilateral ties to a higher level. China would like to work with African countries including Togo to step up China-Africa cooperation under the framework of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum and continuously deepen the traditional China-Africa friendship for the benefit of both peoples, Yang said.

Calling China a "good friend," Gnassingbe thanked China for its long-term support and assistance, saying his country would take the opportunity of China’s development to boost mutually beneficial cooperation in trade, infrastructure construction, agriculture and healthcare and push for the development of various undertakings in Togo. Togo welcomes the sound cooperation between Africa and China within the framework of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum and appreciates China’s positive and important role in international affairs. Gnassingbe expressed hope that his country would enhance coordination with China in the United Nations, the Group of 20 and coping with climate change. Gnassingbe also wished the Shanghai World Expo a great success.
