From December 10 to 12, 2017, Assistant Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong visited Malawi, during which he paid a courtesy call on President Arthur Peter Mutharika and held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Emmanuel Fabiano, exchanging in-depth views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern. Chen Xiaodong, Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Emmanuel Fabiano jointly attended the reception celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of China-Malawi diplomatic relations.

Chen Xiaodong expressed that over the past 10 years since China and Malawi established diplomatic relations, the two countries have always upheld the principle of sincere friendship, equality, win-win cooperation and common development. Political mutual trust has been constantly deepened, cooperation in various fields has been comprehensively advanced at a rapid speed, and the friendship between China and Malawi is deeply rooted in the two peoples’ hearts. China stands ready to make joint efforts with Malawi, further deepen political mutual trust between the two countries and friendship between the two peoples, promote the achievements of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation to yield more results at a faster speed in Malawi, and elevate China-Malawi relations to a new height in the next decade.

Malawi thanked China for providing precious support since the establishment of diplomatic relations and expressed satisfaction with fruitful results achieved from Malawi-China relations. The decision made by the Malawian government back then to establish diplomatic relations with China fully conforms to the fundamental interests of the two countries. Malawi will continue adhering to the one-China principle, and deepen exchanges and cooperation with China in various fields, so as to promote bilateral relations for greater development.

During the visit, Chen Xiaodong also gave an interview to Malawian mainstream media and inspected relevant cooperation projects of the two countries.
