On March 20, 2019, President Xi Jinping respectively sent messages of condolence to President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe and President Arthur Peter Mutharika of Malawi to extend his condolences over the tropical cyclone disaster.

In the messages of condolence, Xi Jinping expressed that the tropical cyclone Idai caused heavy causalities and property losses in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. On behalf of the Chinese government and people and in my own name, I would like to extend profound condolences to the victims and sincere sympathies to the families of the victims and the missing as well as to the injured and all those in the disaster-hit areas. The Chinese people feel the pain of the three African countries. It is believed that under the strong leadership of the governments of the three countries, their people can certainly be able to prevail over the disaster and rebuild their homes soon.
