Xi Jinping Meets with Malawi’s President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera

On the morning of August 24, 2023 local time, President Xi Jinping met with Malawi’s President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.

Xi Jinping commended President Chakwera for upholding the one-China principle since taking office, and noted that China supports Malawi in exploring a development path that suits its national conditions and stands ready to continue providing support and assistance for Malawi's economic and social development within its capacity. China hopes that the two sides will continue to support each other on issues concerning their respective core interests and major concerns, and strive for new achievements in bilateral practical cooperation, and new progress of China-Malawi relations. China is ready to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with Malawi and other developing countries and work for a more just and equitable international order.

Chakwera said that China is always the first country to lend a helping hand when Malawi faces difficulties. Recalling his recent visit to China, Chakwera said he was warmly received, and keenly felt that China is Malawi's true friend, brother, and partner. Malawi unswervingly upholds the one-China policy, and the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping is conducive to the common development of developing countries. Malawi is ready to constantly deepen friendship and cooperation with China.
