Yang Jiechi Meets with Cypriot Parliament Speaker Karoyian

On February 1, 2010, visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with Cypriot parliament speaker Marios Karoyian in Nicosia, capital of Cyprus.

Yang first conveyed the cordial greetings and best wishes of Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Wu Bangguo. Despite different national conditions, China and Cyprus have been trustworthy friends and partners who have trusted and supported each other. Both sides have maintained frequent high-level exchanges with dynamic contacts between political parties, parliaments and peoples in recent years, Yang said. The two countries have conducted consultation and coordination in multilateral organizations such as the United Nations, and made progress in their cooperation in various fields, he said.

China highly appreciates the adherence to the one-China policy by the Cypriot government and parliament, and China has always supported the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus, the Chinese minister said. Both sides share broad common interests and strong aspiration for development and cooperation. China is ready to work jointly with Cyprus to enhance their traditional friendship, expand the scale of trade and investment, boost cooperation of mutual benefit, deepen cooperation between legislatures of the two countries and learn from each other’s experience on state governance and legislation so as to further promote their bilateral ties and benefit the two peoples, he added.

Karoyian thanked for Chairman Wu’s regards. He said that Cyprus-China ties are at their historical best, as the two countries have maintained close friendly cooperation in politics, trade and economy, investment, culture, education and other fields. Each Cypriot hopes to enhance such cooperation. China has always upheld principles and justice in international affairs. Karoyian expressed his appreciation for China's selfless support to Cyprus during the hardest times of the country. He spoke highly of China’s development and progress and its increasingly important role in international affairs. He reiterated that Cyprus has adhered to, and will continue to adhere to the one-China policy and commit itself to cooperation between the European Union and China.
