Yang Jiechi Holds Talks with Cyprus Foreign Minister

On October 19, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks in Beijing with Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou, who is here in China for an official visit.

Yang said that China attached great importance to China-Cyprus relations and was ready to join with Cyprus to enhance bilateral ties by taking the opportunity of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. China is ready to work with Cyprus to maintain exchanges at all levels, keep closer pragmatic cooperation, strengthen coordination and cooperation in international affairs and safeguard and develop the traditional friendship. Yang said China appreciated Cyprus' efforts to strengthen Sino-EU relations and valued the EU's role in international affairs. China hoped to make joint efforts with Cyprus to push forward the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership in line with the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, Yang added.

Kyprianou said Cyprus highly valued the two states' sincere friendship. He said the Cypriot side would as always support China's efforts in safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cyprus wished to enhance cooperation and exchanges with China in many fields and promote EU-China relations, Kyprianou added.

Both sides also exchanged views on Cyprus and other international and regional issues.
