Xi Jinping Meets with President of Cyprus

On October 15, 2015, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chinese President, met in Beijing with President Nicos Anastasiades of Cyprus who was in China for a visit and attendance of the Asian Political Parties' Special Conference on Silk Road.

Xi Jinping pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Cyprus, bilateral relations have been developing smoothly. China attaches importance to the traditional friendship with Cyprus. Under the current circumstance, the further development of China-Cyprus relations conforms to the interests of the two peoples. It is hoped that the two sides will consolidate traditional political mutual trust, maintain bilateral high-level exchanges and strengthen dialogues and exchanges at various levels including the governments, legislative bodies and political parties; comprehensively expand cooperation in various fields, give full play to each other's respective advantages to vigorously promote bilateral cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, energy, culture, education, tourism and infrastructure construction and thus continuously enrich the connotation of bilateral relations; keep close cooperation in international affairs and jointly contribute to world peace and development. China appreciates the consistent One-China stance held by successive Cypriot leaders.

Xi Jinping stressed that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU). As a key member of the EU, Cyprus always adheres to an objective and fair position on issues related to China's core interests and major concerns and has played a positive role in promoting China-EU strategic mutual trust and maintaining the overall picture of China-EU relations. It is hoped that Cyprus will continue to support the construction of China-EU four major partnerships. China has full confidence in future development of China-EU relations.

Nicos Anastasiades indicated that Cyprus cherishes the friendly and cooperative relations with China and thanks China for holding an objective and fair position on the Cypriot issue. He was very happy to visit China and attend the Asian Political Parties' Special Conference on the Silk Road held by the CPC. The "Belt and Road" initiatives are essential to peace and prosperity of all Asian countries and serve as precious opportunities for the sustainable development of European countries.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee and Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee (IDCPC) Wang Jiarui attended the meeting.
