Wang Yi Meets with President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou of Cyprus

Local time December 21, 2015, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Nicosia with President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou of Cyprus.

Wang Yi expressed that China-Cyprus relations set a fine example for the equal treatment and friendly cooperation between large and small countries. Each term of leaders of both countries maintains sound relations with increasing mutual trust. The Chinese side understands and supports the rightful and reasonable concerns of the Cypriot side on the Cypriot issue, and is willing to see positive progress from the negotiation between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots. Communication between both legislative bodies constitutes an important part of bilateral political relations. The Foreign Ministry of China supports the National People's Congress (NPC)of China to constantly enhance friendly exchanges with the House of Representatives of Cyprus and expand communication and mutual learning in governance and administration of state affairs.

Yiannakis Omirou noted that Cyprus is a small country whereas China is a great country with large territory. The long-standing and profound traditional friendship between both countries attributes to the equal treatment and sincere interactions of both sides. The Cypriot side appreciates China's understanding and support on the Cypriot issue, and will keep upholding the One-China policy. It is hoped that China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, can maintain its efforts to support the peaceful settlement of the Cypriot issue within the UN. The House of Representatives of Cyprus is willing to further enhance friendly exchanges with the NPC of China and strengthen the friendship and cooperation between both peoples so as to make contribution to the further development of Cyprus-China relations.
