Wang Yi Meets with President Nicos Anastasiades of Cyprus

On September 19, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President Nicos Anastasiades of Cyprus on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Nicos Anastasiades asked Wang Yi to convey warm greetings to President Xi Jinping, and expressed that Cyprus is satisfied with the constantly consolidated bilateral relations and increasingly deepened bilateral cooperation. Cyprus stands ready to, together with China, grasp the opportunity of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", further tap potential, and deepen cooperation in various fields, so as to better benefit the two peoples. Cyprus attaches great importance to China's international status and role, and will continue to support each other with China on international affairs. Cyprus appreciates China's principled stance on the Cypriot issue and hopes China will continue to play an important role in its settlement.

Wang Yi firstly conveyed President Xi Jinping's greetings to Nicos Anastasiades. He said that China and Cyprus enjoy sound relations, which have become a model for countries of different sizes and systems getting along with one another. Attaching high importance to its friendship with Cyprus, China is willing to further consolidate political mutual trust and support each other on issues concerning each other's core interests. China thanks Cyprus for actively responding to the "Belt and Road" initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, and would like to see Cyprus play an important role in the process of the "Belt and Road" construction. Regarding to the Cypriot issue, China has always held that it should be settled with reasonable solutions through dialogue and negotiation on the basis of relevant UN resolutions. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to play a constructive role in promoting the settlement of the issue.
