On 17 April, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi took a phone call from Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus.

Wang noted that the relations between China and Cyprus are built on a solid political foundation and the two sides have always trusted and supported each other. When China was fighting an all-out battle against COVID-19 earlier this year, Cyprus stood by China's side. Likewise, China would never sit by and watch when its friend is in difficulty. Though China still faces the challenge of stemming imported infections and a possible domestic resurgence, we are prepared to support Cyprus the best way we can despite these difficulties. We will share with Cyprus containment experience without any reservation and facilitate its purchase of medical supplies from China. The Chinese side will protect the health and safety of Cypriot diplomats and nationals in China and trusts that Cyprus will do the same for the health, safety and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese nationals, including students in Cyprus.

Wang Yi underscored that by reaching out to other countries in need in addition to fighting COVID-19 at home, China is meeting its obligation as a responsible major country, an act of international humanitarianism and more importantly, of promoting President Xi Jinping's vision of a community with a shared future for mankind. There have been attempts to smear and distort China's action, which can only serve to expose an inherent narrow-mindedness and find no support among the international community.

Christodoulides expressed deep appreciation for China's firm support during a difficult time for Cyprus, which will always be remembered. China's effective control of the virus is a shining example for the world. China has acted with a great sense of responsibility to humanity and morality. It has actively helped other countries, sending medical experts and sharing experience to contribute to international cooperation against COVID-19. Cyprus is committed to deepening friendship with China and will look after well the health and safety of Chinese nationals in Cyprus.
