Vice Foreign Minister Song Tao Visits Latvia for Bilateral Consultations between Foreign Ministries

On Jul. 31, 2013, Vice Foreign Minister Song Tao held consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of China and Latvia in Riga with State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Andrejs Pildegovičs. Foreign Minister of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs held a meeting with Song Tao.

Song Tao expressed that China views Latvia as an important cooperative partner in the Baltic Sea region and within the European Union (EU). China is willing to strengthen cooperation with Latvia in the fields of politics, economy, trade and people-to-people exchanges, to push forward China-Latvia friendly cooperative relations to a higher level. Over the past one plus year, China-Central & Eastern Europe (CEE) Cooperation has yielded quite a number of positive results. It accords with the wishes of both peoples and also helps to push for more comprehensive, balanced development of China-EU relations. Hope Latvia will continue to play a positive role in deepening China-CEE Cooperation as well as China-EU relations. China is as well willing to maintain communication and consultations with Latvia on international and regional affairs.

The Latvian side expressed that Latvia highly values relations with China and will continue to firmly pursue the One-China policy. Latvia stands ready to keep close high-level exchanges with China, to expand personnel exchanges and to push forward bilateral relations for more achievements in practical cooperation. Latvia welcomes the 12 measures proposed by China to promote cooperation with CEE countries and is willing to continue to take active part in and boost China-CEE Cooperation in all fields.

H.E. Yang Guoqiang, Chinese Ambassador to Latvia, H.E. Ingrida Levrence, Latvian Ambassador to China, Ojars Kalnins, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Latvia, Kaspars Ozolins, State Secretary of Latvian Ministry of Transport, Sandra Bukane, Advisor to the Prime Minister, and Artis Kampars, Chairman of the Latvia-China Business Council, were present at the consultations and the meeting respectively.
