On October 13, 2016, during his attendance at the eighth National Coordinators' Meeting for Cooperation Between China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) in Latvia, Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Haixing met with Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis and State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andrejs Pildegovičs of Latvia. Both sides mainly exchanged views on bilateral relations and China-CEEC cooperation.

Maris Kucinskis said that attaching importance to developing its relations with China, Latvia actively supports and participates in the "Belt and Road" initiative proposed by China and firmly adheres to the One-China policy. Latvia is willing to carry out further cooperation with China in areas including transportation, logistics, education, culture, science and technology. Andrejs Pildegovičs noted that Latvia values the "16+1 cooperation", and both countries have conducted productive cooperation within this framework. Latvia will continue to maintain and strengthen coordination and cooperation with China so as to contribute to the in-depth development of the "16 +1 cooperation".

Liu Haixing expressed that China attaches great importance to developing relations with Latvia and regards Latvia as an important cooperation partner in the Baltic Sea Region. This year coincides with the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Both sides should, on the basis of mutual respect and equal treatment, take this as an opportunity to further advance political mutual trust and expand practical cooperation in various fields. Speaking highly of Latvia's active support and participation in the "Belt and Road" construction and the "16+1 cooperation", China is willing to make joint efforts with Latvia to promote the "Belt and Road" initiative and the "16+1 cooperation" to better dock with China-EU relations as well as the development strategies of Latvia.
