Wang Yi Meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

On July 13, 2023 local time, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the latter's request in Jakarta.

Wang Yi said that faced with changes unseen in a century, China and Russia have firmly supported each other in safeguarding legitimate rights and interests, pursued a development path featuring harmonious coexistence and win-win cooperation, and jointly promoted a multi-polar world and greater democracy in international relations. The two sides should follow the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state, keep high-level exchanges, strengthen strategic communication and coordination, shoulder responsibilities as major countries, safeguard their respective national interests and dignity, and defend international fairness and justice.

Wang Yi said that China and Russia are both dialogue partners of ASEAN, and strengthening cooperation with ASEAN countries is conducive to pooling consensus on regional development, advancing multilateral process, and promoting regional prosperity and stability. China is ready to work with Russia to support ASEAN centrality, stay alert to interference by external forces, support Indonesia and ASEAN countries in keeping to the right direction of East Asian cooperation, and defend hard-won peace and stability in the region.

Sergei Lavrov said that Russia and China have kept high-level exchanges, and the successful meeting between the two heads of state this year has injected strong impetus into relations between the two countries. Russia is ready to work with China to follow through on the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state, further strengthen strategic coordination, deepen cooperation in various fields, promote the process of world multipolarity, oppose all forms of hegemonism and power politics, and jointly support ASEAN centrality.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on strengthening coordination and cooperation within such multilateral frameworks as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS.
