On July 4, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Miroslav Lajčák, the candidate for the next United Nations (UN) Secretary-General and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia.

Wang Yi expressed that China attaches importance to the relationship with Slovakia, and regards the country as China's friendly cooperative partner in the European Union (EU) and Central and Eastern European region. China is willing to continuously maintain bilateral exchanges at all levels, strengthen cooperation in the joint-construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative, and deepen communication and cooperation in such areas as economy and trade, connectivity, people-to-people and cultural exchanges on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. It is hoped that Slovakia could make new contributions to China-EU relations and the development of "16+1 cooperation" during its tenure as the EU rotating presidency.

Miroslav Lajčák said that Slovakia and China enjoy traditional friendship. Slovakia will continue to adhere to the One-China policy, comprehensively develop its relationship with China, actively participate in the construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative, and push forward bilateral relations, "16+1 cooperation" and EU-China relations.

Both sides also exchanged views on the race for the next UN Secretary-General, the UK referendum on EU membership, EU’s fulfillment of its obligation stipulated in Section 15 of the Protocol on the Accession of China to the World Trade Organization and other topics.
