On July 6, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran on the sidelines of his attendance at the Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the Iranian Nuclear Issue in Vienna of Austria. Both sides mainly exchanged views on the upcoming Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the Iranian Nuclear Issue.

Wang Yi expressed that this is the first Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the Iranian Nuclear Issue held by all the relevant parties after the withdrawal of the United States (US) from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian Nuclear Issue. It is believed that the meeting will send out the clear signal of safeguarding the JCPOA, international rules and nuclear non-proliferation regime. Wang Yi said that the observance of international agreements is the most basic international rule. The effectiveness and seriousness of the JCPOA on the Iranian Nuclear Issue should be safeguarded. The Chinese side is willing to, together with various relevant parties including Iran, make joint efforts to this end.

Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed that after the unilateral withdrawal of the US from the JCPOA on the Iranian Nuclear Issue, Iran still decided to remain in the JCPOA, embodying a responsible attitude. It is hoped that this Foreign Ministers' Meeting could send out a strong signal of solidarity, not only commit to safeguarding the JCPOA, but also devote to maintaining the legitimate rights and interests of various parties including Iran according to the JCPOA. Highly appreciating the active role China has played in the Iranian nuclear issue for a long-time, Iran hopes that China could continue playing an important role in safeguarding international rules and international order under the new circumstances.
