On July 6, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia in Vienna, Austria on the sidelines of the Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the Iranian Nuclear Issue.

Wang Yi said that President Vladimir Putin's state visit to China and his attendance at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Qingdao Summit last month were a complete success, elevating China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination to new heights. The intensified communication and close friendship between President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin have always played a strategic leading role in China-Russia relations. The two sides should actively implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state during their meeting in Beijing, well prepare for other exchanges between the two heads of state within the year, and further deepen cooperation in various fields and strategic coordination in international affairs between China and Russia. Facing the complicated and ever-changing international situation, the two sides should adhere to multilateralism, maintain the international order and safeguard the common interests of the two countries.

Sergey Lavrov expressed that Russia congratulated China on successfully hosting the SCO Qingdao Summit and thanked China for awarding a Friendship Medal to President Vladimir Putin during his visit to China. Sergey Lavrov believed that it fully indicated the high level of the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination between the two countries and the close friendship between the two heads of state. Russia is willing to, together with China, strengthen strategic communication and coordination, deepen practical cooperation, and jointly safeguard the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and various basic norms of international law.

Regarding the Iranian nuclear issue, the Foreign Ministers of the two countries unanimously agreed that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian Nuclear Issue should be observed, and the international rules should be maintained as well as the legitimate rights and interests of all countries should be safeguarded. China and Russia will work together to promote the upcoming Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the Iranian Nuclear Issue to send a clear political signal in this regard and to achieve positive results.

The Foreign Ministers of the two countries also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula situation and other international and regional issues of common concern.
