Wang Zhaoguo Meets with Icelandic President Grimsson

On May 18, 2005, Wang Zhaoguo, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland in the Great Hall of the People.

Wang made positive comments on the development of China-Iceland relations. He said that with the joint efforts of both sides, the political mutual trust between the two countries has been enhanced, economic and trade cooperation expanded and cooperation in such fields as culture, health, juridical affairs, education, science and technology yielded fruitful results. The Chinese side attaches great importance to developing the friendly and cooperative relationship with Iceland and is willing to work together with the Icelandic side to promote the continuous development of bilateral ties.

Wang said that the NPC of China maintains sound cooperative relations with the Parliament of Iceland. He hoped that the legislative bodies of the two countries could strengthen the exchanges and cooperation and contribute to the comprehensive development of bilateral relations.

Grimsson said that Iceland pays attention to the political, economic and social development of China and is fully confident of the prospects of the development of bilateral relations. Iceland is willing to strengthen the exchanges between the legislatives bodies of the two countries, expand the economic and trade cooperation between the two sides, and strengthen the friendship between the two peoples. He also reaffirmed the adherence to the one-China policy by the Icelandic government.
