President of the Swiss Confederation Ueli Maurer Meets with Wang Yi

On October 22, 2019 local time, President of the Swiss Confederation Ueli Maurer met with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Berne.

Ueli Maurer asked Wang Yi to convey his sincere greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping. He said, the relations between Switzerland and China have developed smoothly and have always been at the forefront of Europe-China relations. Expressing admiration for the tremendous achievements China has made in its development, Switzerland fully supports the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) proposed by President Xi Jinping and believes that this initiative will serve as a bridge for cooperation between China and Europe, which will help improve the quality of China-Europe cooperation and bring significant opportunities to Switzerland and Europe. The Swiss side hopes to further consolidate political mutual trust with the Chinese side and strengthen bilateral cooperation in such fields as trade, investment, finance, environmental protection and innovation. Swiss companies have become the beneficiaries of China's first round of opening-up, and the Swiss side welcomes Chinese companies' investment in the country. China is a stable and active force for world peace and prosperity. Switzerland is willing to strengthen communication with the Chinese side on international and regional issues and jointly practice multilateralism and free trade.

Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping's sincere greetings to Ueli Maurer. Wang Yi said, Switzerland adheres to the pioneering spirit and is able to accurately grasp the trend and direction of historical development in its relations with China, and has created multiple "firsts", which reflects its long-term strategic vision. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Swiss side to take the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year as an opportunity and use the joint construction of the BRI as a new driving force to promote the combination of China's market potential and the advantages of Swiss quality, carry forward the spirit of opening-up and win-win cooperation, and further promote bilateral cooperation.

Wang Yi expressed, the Chinese side attaches importance to Switzerland's unique role and influence as a neutral country and as an important host country of United Nations agencies, and is willing to work with the Swiss side to maintain multilateralism, build an open world economy, and defend the basic norms governing international relations.

On the same day, Wang Yi also co-chaired the second round of China-Switzerland Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue with Member of the Swiss Federal Council and Switzerland's Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.
