On July 7, 2016, President Xi Jinping met at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse with Prime Minister Peter O'Neill of Papua New Guinea.

Xi Jinping welcomed Prime Minister Peter O'Neill's official visit to China on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and congratulated on the fruitful outcomes achieved from the visit. Xi Jinping pointed out that bilateral relationship has yielded historic development over the past 40 years, bringing tangible benefit to the two peoples. China is willing to work with Papua New Guinea to push for greater development of bilateral strategic partnership.

Xi Jinping stressed that the two countries should enhance high-level communication, expand exchanges in various fields and enhance political mutual trust. China appreciates Papua New Guinea's adherence to the One-China policy, and will always respect the development path chosen by the country according to its national conditions and support the country's efforts in safeguarding national independence and promoting national development. The two sides should actively expand practical cooperation, better integrate development strategies, deepen cooperation in such areas as trade, energy, resources, infrastructure construction, agriculture and fishery industry and speed up the implementation of agreed projects, so as to achieve advantage complementarity, mutual benefit and win-win results. Both sides should expand local cooperation and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, facilitate the friendship between more provinces of both countries, and take the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to well host relevant culture exchange activities. Both countries should strengthen communication and coordination in international and regional issues. China is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with Papua New Guinea in multilateral mechanisms including the UN, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the ASEAN Regional Forum and Pacific Islands Forum, while actively expanding cooperation in such areas as coping with climate change and sustainable development, so as to jointly safeguard the interest of developing countries. China supports Papua New Guinea to host the 2018 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

Peter O'Neill congratulated on the 95th anniversary of the founding of Communist Party of China, and thanked China for its long-term support and assistance to the country. Peter O'Neill expressed that Papua New Guinea attaches high importance to the strategic partnership featuring mutual respect and common development with China, and firmly adheres to the One-China policy. The country is willing to deepen cooperation with China in various fields such as economy, trade, energy, finance and tourism, boost people-to-people and cultural exchanges and conduct close communication and coordination in multilateral and regional affairs, so as to jointly safeguard the interest of developing countries. Papua New Guinea respects the Chinese government's stance on the South China Sea issue, and encourages parties directly concerned to peacefully resolve relevant maritime disputes through dialogue and negotiation and in accordance with the international law.
