Wang Yi: The Venezuelan Issue Should Be Settled by the Venezuelan People Through Dialogues and Negotiations

2019-07-02 23:05

On July 2, 2019, when jointly meeting the press with Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón of Mexico in Beijing, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi pointed out that both China and Mexico believe that the Venezuelan issue is an internal affair of Venezuela and should be ultimately settled by the Venezuelan people through dialogues and negotiations. It is believed that Venezuela is wise enough and able to safeguard the national stability, dignity and people’s unity. The international community should firmly uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations as well as the basic rules of international relations, and not directly intervene in the internal affairs of Venezuela. The international community should also boycott unilateral sanctions and oppose military intervention. Both the government and opposition of Venezuela should be encouraged to figure out measures for peacefully settling disputes within the framework of constitution. As an important member of the Montevideo Mechanism, Mexico has played a crucial and constructive role in building an external environment for the peaceful settlement of the Venezuelan issue, which the Chinese side appreciates. We are willing to work with the international community, including Mexico, to continue engaging in more work to promote peace talks. It is believed that Venezuela will surely restore peace and stability and the Venezuelan people will certainly be back to the normal life track.

Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón expressed that Mexico firmly opposes any external intervention in Venezuelan affairs and advocates that the future of Venezuela should be independently and peacefully determined by the Venezuelan people through dialogues.
