On 15 April, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

Wang noted that during their recent phone call, President Xi Jinping and President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reached important common understandings on closer cooperation against COVID-19 and the elevation of bilateral relations. China will step up communication with Mexico to implement them. Wang expressed confidence that by fighting the outbreak together, China and Mexico will see their win-win cooperation deepened and comprehensive strategic partnership up to new heights.

Wang said that a few days ago when China mourned for heroes and compatriots lost to COVID-19, the Mexican embassy in Beijing flew its flag at half-mast in a show of friendship to the Chinese people. China feels keenly for Mexico as it battles the outbreak. Despite its own tough task of preventing imported cases and a resurgence at home, China understands the urgent needs of Mexico and will overcome difficulties to do its best to support Mexico, including facilitating its purchase of urgently needed supplies from China, coordinating experts from the two sides to share experience via video links, fast-tracking the approval of charter cargo flights and keeping China-Mexico air bridge open.

Ebrard commended China for helping Mexico's outbreak response. As COIVD-19 spreads across Mexico, he expressed hope for China's continued support in purchasing and shipping medical supplies, equipment and drugs. Mexico will work with China to implement the important common understandings of the two presidents and take forward the bilateral ties through the joint fight against the outbreak.
