Wang Yi Holds Talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel González Sanz of Costa Rica

On September 15, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel González Sanz of Costa Rica in San Jose.

Wang Yi firstly congratulated Costa Rica on the 196th Independence Day and expressed that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of China-Costa Rica diplomatic relations. China-Costa Rica relations have enjoyed smooth development with fruitful outcomes under the leadership of the two heads of state over the past 10 years. China stands ready to make concerted efforts with Costa Rica to forge a closer, more extensive and deeper strategic partnership with all out efforts and further benefit the two peoples, while making greater contributions to safeguarding regional peace and stability.

Wang Yi expressed that China appreciates Costa Rica for adhering to the one-China policy and is willing to continuously understand and support each other with Costa Rica on issues concerning respective core interests and constantly enhance bilateral political mutual trust. Latin American and the Caribbean areas are the natural extension of the Maritime Silk Road. China welcomes Costa Rica to actively participate in the building of the "Belt and Road" and stands ready to enhance cooperation with the Costa Rican side in such six major areas as infrastructure construction, trade, new energy, public security, people-to-people and cultural exchanges and regional affairs. China commends Costa Rica for its efforts in advancing the construction of the Forum between China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and hopes that Costa Rica could play a more remarkable role for the development of China-Latin America relations, especially the relations between China and Central American and Caribbean countries.

Manuel González Sanz thanked Wang Yi for visiting Costa Rica on the 196th Independence Day, expressed that the country admires China's development achievements and respects China's position as a major country, and thanked China for its support and assistance for the development of Costa Rica. The two countries established a strategic partnership featuring equality, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation in 2015, providing an important opportunity for deepening bilateral relations. Costa Rica is willing to continuously deepen cooperation with China in such areas as infrastructure construction, trade, new energy, public security, people-to-people and cultural exchanges, in a purpose to elevate bilateral relations to a new high. Costa Rica appreciates the Belt and Road Initiative set forth by China and hopes to actively participate in it for the sake of its own development. Costa Rica adheres to the one-China policy and will staunchly support China on the issues concerning China's core interests. The establishment of China's diplomatic relations with Panama provides new opportunities for the development of Costa Rica. The Costa Rican side stands ready to discuss conducting trilateral cooperation with China and Panama.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

Before their talks, the two Foreign Ministers jointly signed the agreement on economic and technological cooperation between the two countries and met the press.
