On November 3, 2018, the Dominican Republic’s Embassy in China was officially inaugurated in Beijing. State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi jointly attended the inauguration ceremony with President Danilo Medina and Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado of the Dominican Republic.

Wang Yi expressed in his speech that the most frequent words mentioned by China and the Dominican Republic were “first” and “historic” since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations on May 1. Since then, new progress has been made in China-Dominican Republic relations every day, and new history has been written by both countries every day, which could be attributed to the wise decision of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries made by President Xi Jinping and President Danilo Medina. Yesterday, top leaders of the two countries met with each other for the very first time and reached important consensus. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the Dominican Republic side, in line with the political guidance of the two heads of state, promote bilateral cooperation in various fields to stride forward and catch up with the times as well as stand at the forefront, and make greater contributions to the common development of both countries as well as to the shared prosperity of the two peoples.

Wang Yi said that within one and a half months, China and the Dominican Republic have officially opened an embassy in each other's country. The move will build a bridge of friendship linking the political centers of the two countries, open a new window of mutual understanding between the two peoples, and establish a new bond of bilateral comprehensive cooperation. History will prove that the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Dominican Republic completely conforms to the fundamental interests of the Dominican Republic and its people, and fully accords with the general trend of the development of the times. The establishment of China-Dominican Republic relations is bound to shine throughout history, and China-Dominican Republic cooperation is bound to become a great undertaking of lasting importance.

It is a wise choice and a historic moment in the foreign relations of the Dominican Republic to accept the one-China principle and establish diplomatic relations with China. China and the Dominican Republic officially established diplomatic relations on May 1, 2018. At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, President Danilo Medina of the Dominican Republic will pay a state visit to China and attend the first China International Import Expo from November 1 to 6, 2018.
