On 12 May, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke by phone with Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado of the Dominican Republic.

Wang said that viruses know no borders and mankind shares a common future. Since the start of COVID-19, China has actively engaged in international cooperation against the disease with the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind. Despite its huge domestic need for medical supplies due to the pressure of a resurgence and risks of case importation, China has offered emergency supplies to over 150 countries. China is truly aware of the enormous challenges facing the Dominican Republic in fighting the virus. We have offered supplies and technical assistance, and will continue to provide support and assistance through the government, party, sub-national and non-governmental channels. It is believed that under the leadership of President Danilo Medina, the people of the Dominican Republic will prevail over the disease at an early date.

Wang noted that China and the Dominican Republic recently celebrated the second anniversary of diplomatic ties. The two countries need to take this opportunity to follow through on the important consensus of the two Presidents by enhancing mutual political trust, advancing practical cooperation and promoting people-to-people exchanges. This will bring more benefits to the two peoples. The one-China principle is the political foundation of the bilateral ties. China highly appreciates the Dominican Republic's commitment to the one-China policy on multiple occasions, and hopes that the two sides will cherish the hard-won achievements since the establishment of diplomatic ties, and work together for the steady and long-term growth of the bilateral relations.

Vargas expressed heartfelt thanks to China for its strong support and assistance to the Dominican Republic's fight against COVID-19, and his readiness to work with China to secure an early victory against the virus. The Dominican Republic will continue to uphold the one-China policy and safeguard the political foundation of the bilateral relations. The two sides have become good friends and partners since the establishment of diplomatic ties, and the Dominican Republic will deepen dialogue and cooperation with China to further advance the bilateral relations.
