Xi Jinping Meets with President Park Geun-hye of the Republic of Korea

On September 2, 2015, Xi Jinping met with President Park Geun-hye of the Republic of Korea (ROK) at the Great Hall of the People. The two heads of state spoke highly of the current development of China-ROK relations.

Xi Jinping welcomed Park Geun-hye to attend the 70th anniversary of the victory of Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascism War in China. Xi Jinping stressed that China and the ROK are friendly close neighbors and the important forces to promote regional and global peace. The two peoples were united and cooperative in their resistance against Japanese colonial aggression and the struggle to win national liberation, and made significant contributions to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War.

Xi Jinping pointed out that at present, the China-ROK relations are presenting a gratifying situation where political mutual trust, economic and trade cooperation, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges are advancing together. The series of important consensuses reached by Ms. President and me during our mutual visits are being fully implemented, and many positive results have been achieved. High-level visits between the two countries are frequent; both sides officially signed a free trade agreement; new progress has been made in bilateral cooperation within the framework of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the level of people-to-people and cultural exchanges between both countries has been improved. We would like to deepen exchanges and cooperation with the ROK in various fields and constantly stride toward the “Four Partner” goals, i.e. achievement of common development, commitment to regional peace, revitalization of Asia hand in hand and promotion of world prosperity. The “Eurasian Cooperation Initiative” proposed by the ROK side corresponds to the construction of the “Belt and Road”. The Chinese side welcomes the ROK side to actively participate in the construction of “Belt and Road” and the work concerning the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Both sides should increase input in China-ROK people-to-people and cultural exchanges and concentrate on successful running of the year of tourism in China and the ROK.

Xi Jinping emphasized that the Chinese side always adheres to the denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, insists on maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and sticks to solving problems through dialogue and consultation. The Chinese side advocates that the “September 19 Joint Statement” of the Six-Party Talks and relevant resolutions of UN Security Council should be implemented in real earnest, and opposes against any actions that may lead to tension. All parties should adhere to the denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, and make efforts for an early resumption of and positive progress from the Six-Party Talks. The Chinese side hopes that the DPRK and the ROK continue to improve relations through dialogue, promote reconciliation and cooperation, and finally realize independent peaceful reunification. The Chinese side supports relevant parties’ ideas in promoting regional peace and cooperation, and is willing to work with all parties concerned to explore Northeast Asian regional cooperation thus promote common development and prosperity in the region. The Chinese side is ready to maintain communication and coordination with the ROK on international and regional issues including the issue on the Korean Peninsula.

Park Geun-hye expressed that it was of great significance to attend the 70th anniversary of the victory of Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War in China. The history of the two countries sharing weal and woe in the last century highlights the significance of the current ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership. The ROK side stands ready to actively enhance ROK-China cooperation in all fields, and to promote the coordination and connection between the “Eurasian Cooperation Initiative” and the “Belt and Road” initiative. The ROK side hopes to enhance coordination and cooperation with the Chinese side in addressing the situation on the Korean Peninsula, realizing denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, safeguarding the peace and stability of Northeast Asia and facilitating Northeast Asian regional cooperation. The ROK side also hopes to work with the Chinese side to guide the relationships among the countries in the region to move onto the track of sound development.
