Xi Jinping Holds Talks with President Heinz Fischer of Austria

On March 27, 2015, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Heinz Fischer of Austria at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping welcomed Heinz Fischer to pay a state visit to China and attend the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2015, and appreciated his important contribution to the development of bilateral relations over the years. Xi Jinping pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic relationship over 40 years ago, China and Austria have constantly deepened cooperation in various fields and now enjoy a sound development momentum. The bilateral relations stand at a new starting point. I stand ready to make joint efforts with you to sow the seeds of friendship and plough the land of cooperation so as to promote bilateral relations for greater development.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and Austria should be friends that respect and trust each other, respect and take care of the core interests and concerns of each other, strengthen communication and cooperation in politics, diplomacy, judicature and other fields, consolidate the cornerstone of mutual trust in political relations and enhance communication and coordination in multilateral organizations such as the United Nations (UN) as well as major international and regional issues. China and Austria should be partners of practical cooperation, deeply tap the potential in advanced manufacturing industry, environmental protection and green science and technology, construction of smart city and power network, agriculture, finance and other fields, nurture new growth points for cooperation and expand the scale of two-way investment. Both sides should strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, jointly hold a series of cultural activities to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relationship, carry out cooperation in innovation and scientific research and exchanges among youths, encourage more local and non-governmental exchanges and promote personnel exchanges and tourism cooperation. China is willing to strengthen cooperation with countries along the route within the framework of " Belt and Road" initiative. As Europe is the terminal point of the Silk Road Economic Belt, China and Austria can actively explore the feasibility of cooperation in specific projects. China hopes that Austria can play a positive role in pushing forward the reaching of the investment agreement between China and the European Union (EU) at an early date, launching the joint feasibility study of the China-EU Free Trade Area and others and welcomes Austria's participation in the cooperation between China and the Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC).

Heinz Fischer expressed that China's economy develops vigorously, bringing prosperity to the country and improving people's livelihood. China attaches importance to and actively participates in international organizations such as the UN and plays a leading role in international affairs, of which Austria speaks highly. They are pleased to see that currently EU-China and Austria-China relations are scoring significant results. The initiative of “Belt and Road” proposed by China appeals greatly to Austria. Austria attaches great importance and stands ready to actively participate in the process. Austria also attaches great importance to the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and hopes that the AIIB can provide assistance to the cooperation between CEEC and China. It is hoped that Austria and China can strengthen cooperation in finance, agriculture, energy, science and technology, culture, arts, sports and other fields.

The two sides also exchanged in-depth views on climate change, the Iranian nuclear issue, the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and other international and regional issues of common concern.

After the talks, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of cooperation documents in economy and trade, agriculture, quality inspection and other fields.

Prior to the talks, Xi Jinping held a welcome ceremony for Heinz Fischer at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. President Xi Jinping's wife Mme. Peng Liyuan, Wang Huning, Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Director of the Policy Research Office of the CPC Central Committee, Li Zhanshu, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, Vice-Chairperson of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee Zhang Baowen, State Councilor Yang Jiechi, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Ma Biao and others attended.
