Xi Jinping Meets with Governor-General Peter John Cosgrove of Australia

On March 30, 2015, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with Governor-General Peter John Cosgrove of Australia. Xi Jinping extended warm welcome to Peter John Cosgrove for his state visit to China and attendance of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2015.

Xi Jinping pointed out that in recent months, both China and Australia are actively implementing the consensus reached by the leaders of the two nations last year and scoring important progress in a number of fields. An all-round and dimensional pattern for China-Australia cooperation is taking shape. Both located in the Asia-Pacific region, a closer China-Australia relationship not only benefits the two nations but also the Asia-Pacific region at large. It is hoped that both sides could seize the important development opportunities for bilateral relations and follow the trend of times and common aspiration of the two peoples to constantly deepen dialogue, communication and cooperation promote the China-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership for sustained and stable development.

Xi Jinping stressed that this year marks the starting year for the construction of China-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership, and the bilateral relations are faced with important development opportunities. I am willing to maintain communication with Mr. Governor-General and Prime Minister Tony Abbott to bring the guidance role of high-level exchanges in bilateral relations into full play. Both sides should ensure the success of the mechanism dialogues such as the new round of China-Australia Annual Prime Ministerial Meeting and intensify the exchanges between the governmental departments, legislative bodies and political parties of the two nations. The two sides should work to sign and approve the China-Australia free trade agreement within this year and implement it as soon as possible, so as to equip the bilateral economic and trade cooperation with a new accelerator. Both countries should actively promote the synergy and cooperation between the western development strategy of China and development strategy for Northern Australia on the basis of mutual benefit and mutual complementarity and strive to find out the cutting points in energy resources, agriculture and farming, infrastructure construction , protection of ecological environment, and other fields to achieve a batch of new projects. The two nations should also boost cooperation in judicial sector and law-enforcement, join hands to crack down on the transnational crimes, continue ploughing deeply the fertile soil of bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and intensify exchanges between the youth of the two countries, so as to make the China-Australia friendship more deep rooted in the hearts of the two peoples. China is willing to, together with Australia, intensify the cooperation in defense through the mechanisms including high-level mutual visits between the two armies, defense consultation, as well as joint drilling and training, so as to consolidate the security belts of the bilateral relations. We are ready to, together with all states including Australia, commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the world anti-fascist war, safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and push for world peace, stability and prosperity.

Peter John Cosgrove noted that he is pleased with this visit to China, which is his first state visit after he assumed the office of the Governor-General. China just hosted the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2015 successfully. As an important meeting, it once again proved the vitality of the Asia-Pacific region. The views expounded by President Xi Jinping at the conference were encouraging. During his visit to China this time, he also paid a visit to Guangdong Province and Chongqing. Australia hopes to be a partner in the development of Southwest China. Australia has applied to join the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and also welcomes China to establish an RMB clearing bank in Sydney. Australia is approving the Australia-China free trade agreement, which will bring significant interests to the two nations and vigorously promote the economic and trade exchanges between the two nations after it comes into effect. Australia looks forward to working with China to boost the exchanges between the young military officials and senior leaders of the two armies, and enhance cooperation with China in law-enforcement, anti-corruption, the holding of the G20 Summit and other aspects. It is also ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation in international affairs with China.

Prior to the meeting, Xi Jinping held a welcoming ceremony for Peter John Cosgrove at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Mme. Peng Liyuan, wife of President Xi Jinping, Wang Huning, Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Director of the Policy Research Office of the CPC Central Committee, Li Zhanshu, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, Zhang Ping, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, State Councilor Yang Jiechi, Ma Peihua, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and others were present.
