On May 7 local time, President Xi Jinping held talks in Astana with President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan.

On behalf of the Chinese government and people, Xi Jinping extended congratulations to President Nursultan Nazarbayev on his re-election as the Kazakh President. Xi Jinping noted that China-Kazakhstan comprehensive strategic partnership presents a momentum of rapid development in recent years, with the cooperation in all fields being smoothly advanced. China attaches great importance to the development of China-Kazakhstan relations and stands ready to join efforts with Kazakhstan to comprehensively deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in economy, security, people-to-people and cultural engagement and other sectors, and intensify coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs, so as to promote the development of China-Kazakhstan relations for more practical results and better benefit the two peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed 'I put forward for the first time the initiative of building the Silk Road Economic Belt during my visit to Kazakhstan in September, 2013. For more than a year, China and Kazakhstan have reaped early harvest in jointly building the Silk Road Economic Belt, for which China highly appreciates. We are willing to promote the docking between the construction of the Silk Road Economic Belt and Kazakhstan's new economic policy of the Bright Road on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, so as to achieve common development and prosperity. Both sides should continue efforts in ensuring the success of the major cooperative projects in infrastructure connectivity, promoting cooperation in energy and finance, deepening people-to-people and cultural cooperation and intensifying cooperation in security. China supports Kazakhstan to host the EXPO-2017 with a special focus.'

Xi Jinping pointed out that China attaches great importance to the work as chair of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), and will work together with Kazakhstan and other countries concerned to make the CICA an efficient platform for promoting consensus, unity and mutual trust among Asian countries.

Nursultan Nazarbayev extended warm welcome to President Xi Jinping for his visit to Kazakhstan. He expressed that since President Xi Jinping’s visit to Kazakhstan in September, 2013, the cooperation consensus reached between him and President Xi Jinping has been implemented, uplifting bilateral relations to a new height. Kazakhstan firmly devotes to constantly developing Kazakhstan-China friendship and stands ready to actively deepen bilateral cooperation in various fields. Kazakhstan supports the proposal of building the Asian Community of Shared Destiny put forward by President Xi Jinping.The Kazakh side believes that the proposal keeps in line with the trend of times and conduces to the interests of nations in the region. Kazakhstan backs the initiative of the “Belt and Road” put forward by China and is ready to be an important partner in building the Silk Road Economic Belt, ensure smooth docking between the construction of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Bright Road strategy for economic development, and intensify cooperation with China in economy, trade, production capacity, energy, science and technology and other fields. Kazakhstan also stands ready to boost cooperation with China in such frameworks as the CICA and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

The two heads of state also discussed the topics of common interest such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the situation in Central Asia.

Prior to the talks, President Nursultan Nazarbayev held a grand welcoming ceremony for Xi Jinping and his wife Mme. Peng Liyuan at the Akorda Presidential Palace. The two heads of state stepped on the reviewing stand together and the military band played the national anthems of both countries. Xi Jinping, accompanied by President Nursultan Nazarbayev, reviewed the guard of honor.
