Xi Jinping Meets with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan

On July 10 local time, President Xi Jinping met with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan in Ufa, Russia.

Xi Jinping pointed out that during your visit to China last year, we had a fruitful talk and made a plan for the development of China-Afghanistan relations in the new period, and bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, security, people-to-people and cultural engagement and other fields is now making constant progress. Relevant projects assisted by the Chinese side have progressed smoothly. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Afghanistan and the Year for China-Afghanistan Friendly Cooperation as well. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the Afghan side, expand exchanges and cooperation at various levels, deepen mutual understanding and friendship and join efforts to promote bilateral cooperation for more achievements.

Xi Jinping emphasized that strengthening security cooperation is in line with the common interests of both China and Afghanistan. The Chinese side is willing to continue to provide the Afghan side with assistance in security materials, technology, equipment and training. The Chinese side appreciates the Afghan side’s support for the Belt and Road initiatives and welcomes the Afghan side to participate in relevant cooperation.

Xi Jinping pointed out that achieving broad and inclusive national reconciliation in Afghanistan is a realistic way to solve the Afghan issue. The Chinese side supports the "Afghan-led and Afghan-owned" reconciliation process and is willing to work with all parties concerned to play a constructive role in resolving the Afghan issue at an early date. The Chinese side supports the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to play its due role in the Afghan issue and proposes that the member states should strengthen cooperation with Afghanistan in drug control, law enforcement personnel training and other fields so as to promote enduring peace and stability in the region.

Mohammad Ashraf Ghani expressed that Afghanistan and China are traditional friendly neighbors. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and China and serves as an important opportunity to deepen bilateral friendly cooperative relations. The Afghan side appreciates the Chinese government for its long-term support for Afghanistan's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, its support for Afghanistan's peace, security and stability and its support for the peace process in Afghanistan. The Afghan side stands ready to work with the Chinese side to safeguard regional peace and stability. The Belt and Road initiatives of the Chinese side are crucial to the Afghan side and the Afghan side is willing to actively participate in them. The Afghan side welcomes and expects the Chinese side to increase investment in infrastructure in Afghanistan.
