Xi Jinping Meets with President U Thein Sein of Myanmar

On April 22, 2015, President Xi Jinping met in Jakarta with President U Thein Sein of Myanmar.

Xi Jinping pointed out that during your two visits to China last year, we reached extensive consensus on advancing China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation. I hope both sides continue our efforts to constantly forge new highlights in bilateral cooperation.

Xi Jinping stressed that China always views China-Myanmar relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and will, together with Myanmar, keep high-level exchanges, enhance experience exchange in governance and administration of state affairs, and deepen strategic cooperation. We appreciate Myanmar's support in such cooperation initiatives as the Belt and Road as well as the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor, and will advance connectivity projects including China-Myanmar highway and the Irrawaddy River land-water transport channel within the above cooperation frameworks, and actively promote cooperation in key fields including agriculture, electric power and finance. China will continue to assist in economic and social development of Myanmar within its capacities. Both sides should take the 65th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations this year as an opportunity to enhance exchanges and cooperation in such areas as culture, education, youth and media and actively create a friendly social environment between the two countries.

U Thein Sein said that Myanmar and China enjoy traditional "Paukphaw" friendship. Myanmar is grateful to China for its long-term and vigorous support and assistance in all fields to Myanmar. Under the new circumstances, Myanmar is committed to boosting bilateral friendly exchanges at all levels and elevating bilateral cooperation in all areas. Myanmar supports and will actively participate in China's initiatives of Belt and Road as well as Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and hopes China involve in Myanmar's infrastructure construction through the Silk Road Fund and other means. Myanmar agrees to strengthen bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges to facilitate the friendship between the two peoples.

When talking about the situation in northern Myanmar, Xi Jinping stressed that China supports the efforts in politically solving the issue in northern Myanmar through peace talks, and hopes to see new progress in Myanmar's peace process as early as possible. U Thein Sein said that the Myanmar government is devoted to safeguarding peace and stability in northern Myanmar as well as safety of people there, and will accelerate the reconstruction in northern Myanmar while pushing forward political dialogue.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
