Xi Jinping Meets with Leaders of Senate and House of Representatives of US Congress

2015-09-26 21:38

On September 25, 2015, President Xi Jinping had a collective meeting with leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives of US Congress on the Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner, Minority Leader of House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and heads of major congressional committees attended the meeting.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the Congress plays a unique role in US politics and has a great influence on US foreign policies including policy towards China. Since the establishment of the diplomatic relations 36 years ago, China-US relations have made historic progress, which is the result of the joint efforts of successive collective leadership of China and all governments of the Democratic and Republican parties of the US and is also inseparable from the legislatures of the two countries. Since my meeting with President Barack Obama at Annenberg Estate in 2013, China-US coordination and cooperation in various fields at bilateral, regional and global levels have all been brought to a new stage. During this visit, I had candid and in-depth talks with President Barack Obama and extensive contacts with people from all circles in the US. Both sides agreed to continue to deepen strategic communication between the two countries, enhance strategic mutual trust and strengthen cooperation in fields such as economy, trade, military, people-to-people and cultural engagement, climate change and development and on major international and regional issues.

Xi Jinping stressed that we should leave better China-US relations to the future generations, which is a goal that China and the US should make long-term efforts for. As the largest developing and developed countries respectively, China and the US face the significant historical subject of how China-US relations will evolve. To develop China-US relations, we need to prevent from falling into the so-called "Thucydides's trap" of major countries' conflicts and confrontations, and need to expand cooperation and manage disparities so as to make the development results of bilateral relations better benefit peoples of the two countries and the world. The common interests between China and the US will only be expanded, not decreased; and the cooperation fields will only be broadened, not narrowed. We need to adopt a right attitude to the disparities between China and the US, and properly handle them in a constructive way.

Leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives of US Congress attending the meeting welcomed Xi Jinping's state visit to the US. They said that China's development has made remarkable achievements in recent years. US-China relations have also been developing rapidly with increasingly close economic relations between the two countries. Bilateral cooperation in fields such as climate change and development is conducive to the two countries and the whole world. At present, US-China relations face vital development opportunities, and exert a great influence on the world. The US Congress is willing to play a positive role in consolidating and deepening bilateral friendship and cooperation.

The two sides also exchanged views on topics such as China's economic situation, climate change, the South China Sea, human rights, the Internet and investment environment.

Yang Jiechi and others attended the meeting.
