On September 26 local time, President Xi Jinping met in New York with President Klaus Iohannis of Romania.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and Romania enjoy traditional friendship. As one of the earliest countries that established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, Romania has always firmly supported China on issues involving its core interests and major concerns. The Chinese people cherish the friendship with the Romanian people. In the future, the China-Romania relations enjoy a promising prospect. Both sides should strengthen coordination on the direction and key aspects of the development of bilateral relationship to constantly enrich the connotation of China-Romania relations, pursue substantial results and comprehensively promote bilateral practical cooperation. China is willing to, together with Romania, boost cooperation in energy and infrastructure construction within the framework of the "Belt and Road" and push for progress on key projects. The two countries should further deepen people-to-people exchanges and expand exchanges and cooperation in tourism, culture, art, publication and other areas, so as to consolidate public opinion foundation for bilateral relations.

Xi Jinping pointed out that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU. He visited the EU headquarters last year, during which he reached important consensus with EU leaders on building four major China-EU partnerships for peace, growth, reform and civilization. The 17th China-EU Summit was successfully held in Brussels this June, during which a number of new initiatives on practical cooperation were put forward and strategic docking between the development of China and the EU was enhanced. Romania is a good friend and good partner of China in the EU, and he hoped that Romania will actively support the building of the four major China-EU partnerships and continue to take part in the mutually beneficial cooperation within the China-EU framework.

Klaus Iohannis noted that Romania and China enjoy a time-honored friendship and extensive common interests. Under the new circumstances, Romania is actively devoted to deepening bilateral relations and looks forward to, together with China, enhancing high-level contacts, boosting economic and trade exchanges and pushing forward people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Romania actively supports developing the four EU-China partnerships, which serves the common interests of the EU and China.
