Xi Jinping Meets with President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria

On September 27 local time, President Xi Jinping met with President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria in New York.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Nigeria enjoy time-honored friendship, and the China-Nigeria strategic partnership with win-win cooperation at the core brings tangible benefits to the two peoples. The two sides should firmly adhere to the overall direction of China-Nigeria friendship, persist in planning and promoting bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, give full play to the two advantages of traditional friendship and strong economic complementarity, and strive to develop new fields and new paths for practical cooperation, so as to push forward the China-Nigeria strategic partnership for comprehensive upgrading.

Xi Jinping pointed out that next year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-Nigeria diplomatic relations. China is willing to, together with the Nigerian side, maintain the communication momentum in all fields, carry out in-depth exchanges of experience in governance and administration of state affairs and economic development and continuously strengthen political mutual trust. Both should actively expand cooperation in various fields such as trade, investment, human resources development, finance, agriculture and fishery, strengthen industrial and production capacity cooperation in automobile, household appliances, steel, construction materials, cotton textiles, food processing and other sectors, and explore to launch oil and gas exploitation and product processing. Both sides should expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges in education, science and technology, culture, healthcare, sports, youth, think tanks, media and others, beef up cooperation in security, enhance communication and coordination on major international issues, so as to jointly safeguard the common interests of China and Africa as well as other developing countries.

Xi Jinping pointed out that this year marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), and the sixth ministerial conference of the Forum is to be held in South Africa in December. China agrees to the suggestion proposed by Africa to elevate this conference to a summit, and is willing to work together with African countries to make this summit a historic event to strengthen solidarity and jointly seek future cooperation between China and Africa.

Muhammadu Buhari expressed that Nigeria appreciates the long-term support and assistance of China for Nigeria's efforts in safeguarding national security and developing society and economy. In recent years, the two sides have made positive progress in cooperation of all fields. The bilateral project construction in infrastructure, agriculture, hydropower development and other sectors has become a new highlight in bilateral relations. The Nigerian government will continuously dedicate to promoting the comprehensive development of Nigeria-China relations. He also expressed gratitude to President Xi Jinping for attending the FOCAC Summit.
