Xi Jinping Meets with President Tony Tan Keng Yam of Singapore

On the afternoon of November 6 local time, President Xi Jinping met with President Tony Tan Keng Yam of Singapore at the Istana of Singapore. The two heads of state agreed to define the China-Singapore relations as a partnership of all-round cooperation keeping up with the times and to launch negotiations on the upgrade of bilateral free trade agreement (FTA).

Xi Jinping pointed out that he is pleased to pay a state visit to Singapore on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore. Over the past 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two sides have carried out multi-layered, practical and innovative all-round cooperation covering a wide range of areas. At present, China-Singapore relations are standing at a period of important opportunities inheriting the past and ushering into the future. China is ready to work with Singapore to open up new prospect for China-Singapore relationship. The first is to ensure a sound top-level design, maintain close high-level exchanges, enhance strategic communication and continue to play the guidance role of the leadership, so as to ensure the bilateral relations move forward along the right track. The second is to enhance practical cooperation by keeping up with the times, earnestly push forward the construction of the third government-to-government project with Chongqing as an operation center to build it into a new exemplary project for China-Singapore mutually beneficial cooperation and continue to earnestly build the two major cooperation projects of the Suzhou Industrial Park and Tianjin Eco-city, so as to maintain the upward momentum of bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Both sides should also actively discuss on the model of cooperation between enterprises of both sides in the third-party markets by combing the "Belt and Road" initiative and tap the potential for financial cooperation within the framework. China is willing to, together with Singapore, intensify bilateral exchanges and cooperation in science, technology, environmental protection, education, people-to-people and cultural exchanges, social governance and other sectors, so as to push bilateral practical cooperation for in-depth development. The third is to strengthen coordination and cooperation in regional and international affairs. As Singapore takes turn as a coordinator country of China-ASEAN relations this year, China is willing to join hands with Singapore to build a community of common destiny between China and the ASEAN by focusing on development and cooperation. China and Singapore could boost communication and coordination within the United Nations (UN), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and other international and regional mechanisms.

Xi Jinping stressed the neighboring countries have a bearing on China's destiny and security and are the foundation for China's development and prosperity. China will firmly pursue a path of peaceful development, stick to the foreign policy of building a friendly and good-neighborly relationship and work with Singapore and other Asian nations to achieve common development.

Tony Tan Keng Yam expressed that he welcomes President Xi Jinping to pay a state visit to Singapore on the joyful occasion of both the 50th anniversary of the founding of Singapore and 25th anniversary of the establishment of Singapore-China diplomatic relations, and its is believed that the visit will lift the Singapore-China cooperative partnership to a new high. In recent years, Singapore and China enjoy an all-round and rapid development in their relations and maintain close and frequent high-level exchanges. Besides the Suzhou Industrial Park and Tianjin Eco-city projects, the third government-to-government project will soon be launched. All of these will inject new impetus into the Singapore-China relationship. Singapore-China cooperation, which has gone beyond the economic and trade field, has been developing in an all-round way by keeping up with times. Singapore agrees to the initiative of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) put forward by China. Singapore believes that it is conducive to regional development and will take an active part in relevant cooperation. Singapore believes that China is a peaceful and stable force in the international community and is willing to boost communication and coordination with China on major international and regional issues. It also supports the ASEAN nations to intensify exchanges and cooperation with China.

Prior to the talks, Tony Tan Keng Yam held a grand welcoming ceremony at the square of the Istana. When Xi Jinping and his wife Mme. Peng Liyuan arrived by car, Tony Tan Keng Yam and his wife greeted them at the parking lot. The two heads of state stepped on the reviewing stand and the military band played the national anthems of both countries. Xi Jinping, accompanied by Tony Tan Keng Yam, reviewed the guard of honor.
