Xi Jinping Meets with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar

On October 16, 2016 local time, President Xi Jinping met in Goa, India with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar.

Xi Jinping pointed out that Myanmar has maintained sound development in recent years. It is believed that the Myanmar people will continue to make steady progress along the development path that suits its own national conditions and constantly yield new achievements in national development and construction. China is willing to join hands with Myanmar to seize opportunities, ride the momentum, carry forward the traditional “Paukphaw” friendship and intensify practical cooperation in various fields, so as to push for continuous development of China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Xi Jinping stressed that during Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit to China in August, China and Myanmar have reached important consensus on deepening comprehensive strategic cooperation in the new era. Both sides should implement relevant consensus, strengthen strategic communication and maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges. The two countries should expand interest integration, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, promote the smooth implementation of existing major projects at an early date and push forward cooperation in such fields as industrial parks, infrastructure construction, agriculture, water conservancy, education and medical care. We should broaden exchanges and cooperation in tourism, Buddhism and local affairs to consolidate the public opinion foundation of China-Myanmar friendship.

Aung San Suu Kyi said that Myanmar and China enjoy a time-honored friendship, which has taken deep roots in the hearts of the two peoples. Myanmar regards China as an important neighboring country. It is of great importance for both sides to maintain high-level exchanges. Grateful for China’s long-term and strong support, Myanmar is willing to further advance the development of Myanmar-China relations and cooperation in all fields and speed up the implementation of relevant cooperation projects, which is in line with the long-term interests of Myanmar and China.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi, Zhou Xiaochuan and others attended the meeting.
