Xi Jinping and President Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan Jointly Attend Video Link Activity for the Opening of Angren-Pap Railway Tunnel

On June 22, 2016 local time, President Xi Jinping and President Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan jointly attended in Tashkent the video link activity for the opening of Angren-Pap railway tunnel.

Xi Jinping was warmly greeted by Islam Karimov and First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Azimov Rustam of Uzbekistan when arriving at the convention center of Tashkent.

Both heads of state stepped into the event hall together, and jointly touched the launching globe. The large screen plays the real time feed of a train moving in and moving out of the tunnel. An introduction clip of the Angren-Pap railway tunnel was also played at the scene. Heads of railway companies of the two countries reported the success of the opening to both heads of state. The two heads of state congratulated each other and made remarks respectively.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the Qamchiq Tunnel is an important and difficult project of the construction of Angren-Pap railway. China and Uzbekistan have successfully built the first railway tunnel in Central Asia by uniting as one, cooperating with sincerity and overcoming difficulties over the past three years. It is a major achievement of the joint-construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative between China and Uzbekistan, and also a new link of friendship and cooperation between the peoples of both countries. Road connectivity is an important part of the construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative and a key area in China-Uzbekistan cooperation. China is willing to strengthen cooperation with Uzbekistan to constantly improve the connectivity level of infrastructures in the region, thus creating more favorable conditions for the development of the two countries and better benefiting both peoples.

Islam Karimov expressed that the opening of Angren-Pap railway tunnel is a big event in the national economic and social development of Uzbekistan, which will greatly benefit the Uzbek people. He expressed gratitude to China for its support and assistance to the Uzbek people for realizing their long-standing wish.

The Angren-Pap railway tunnel is currently the largest project undertaken by a Chinese enterprise in Uzbekistan. It is also a model project of connectivity cooperation of the joint-construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative.

On the same day, accompanied by Islam Karimov and Mayor of Tashkent Rakhmonbek Usmonov, Xi Jinping offered flowers at the monument in the Independence Square.
