Xi Jinping Meets with President Vladimir Putin of Russia

On June 23, 2016 local time, President Xi Jinping met in Tashkent with President Vladimir Putin of Russia.

Xi Jinping pointed out that on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the signing of China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral strategic partnership of coordination, President Vladimir Putin's upcoming state visit to China bears special and important significance. China is willing to join hands with Russia to carry forward the idea of generations of friendship set in the treaty, enhance bilateral political and strategic mutual trust, and beef up mutual assistance. The two countries should push for alignment between development strategies as well as cooperation in the docking of the "Belt and Road" construction and the construction of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), and carry out closer coordination and collaboration in major international and regional affairs.

Xi Jinping stressed that China stands ready to make joint efforts with Russia to play a positive role in the steady and healthy development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). SCO members should expand mutual support, strengthen convergence of interest through mutually beneficial cooperation, and gradually resolve differences through dialogue and consultation. SCO member states should promote practical cooperation and activate practical cooperation within the SCO through advancing regional trade and investment facilitation. On strengthening security cooperation, SCO states need to work out an anti-extremism convention at an early date and improve the mechanism construction for drug control. The SCO organization construction should be steadily advanced so as to ensure the solid, firm, bigger and stronger development of the organization. .

Vladimir Putin firstly extended his profound condolences over the heavy causalities and property loss caused by a tornado that hit Yancheng, Jiangsu in China, and pointed out that the consistent mutual understanding and support are important to both countries. Vladimir Putin expressed that he is looking forward to the upcoming state visit to China and hopes to exchange in-depth views at that time with President Xi Jinping on boosting bilateral relations and enhancing bilateral cooperation.

Vladimir Putin expressed that the SCO has huge influence in safeguarding regional peace and stability as well as promoting regional economic integration. Russia agrees to carry out cooperation in the docking of the EEU and the "Belt and Road" initiative within the SCO framework. It is hoped that the entry of new members will help the SCO play a bigger role in international affairs.
