Xi Jinping Attends Signing Ceremony of Deal on Upgrading China-Chile Free Trade Agreement with President Michelle Bachelet of Chile

On November 11, 2017 local time, President Xi Jinping and President Michelle Bachelet of Chile jointly attended the signing ceremony of the deal on upgrading China-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in Da Nang of Vietnam.

Congratulating on the signing of the deal on upgrading China-Chile FTA, President Xi Jinping stressed that this is China's first FTA upgrade completed with a Latin American country. The upgraded bilateral FTA will inject new impetus into the practical cooperation between China and Chile, set a new benchmark for China's cooperation with other Latin American countries and play a positive and exemplary role in the international arena.

Michelle Bachelet congratulated on the successful convening of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and also wished the "Belt and Road" construction to achieve greater achievements. Chile-China relations have created many firsts in the development history of relations between Latin America and China. Chile stands ready to continuously carry forward the pioneering spirit and advance bilateral practical cooperation for constant and forward-looking development.

Chile is the first Latin American country to sign a Free Trade Agreement with China. During Xi Jinping's state visit to Chile in November 2016, he and Michelle Bachelet jointly announced the initiation of negotiations on upgrading the FTA. After one-year negotiation, both sides smoothly completed the deal on upgrading bilateral FTA.
