Xi Jinping Meets with ROK President Moon Jae-in

On November 11, 2017 local time, President Xi Jinping met with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and the ROK are close neighbors that cannot be moved away and are natural cooperation partners. Friendly communication and win-win cooperation have always been the main theme of China-ROK relations since they established diplomatic relations 25 years ago. The two countries share broad common interests in promoting respective economic and social progress, and in realizing regional peace, stability and prosperity. The sound China-ROK relations conform to the general trend of history and the times, and are common aspirations of the two peoples. China attaches importance to its relations with the ROK, and is willing to work with the ROK to strive to boost healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.

Xi Jinping stressed that the China-ROK relations are at a crucial stage at present. Both sides need to respect each other's core interests and major concerns, maintain political mutual trust, and enhance communication and coordination. Xi Jinping reiterated China's stance on the issue of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD). He stressed that regarding the high-stake issues, the two sides should take an attitude that is responsible to history, to bilateral relations and to both peoples, and make decisions that can endure the test of history, so as to steadily move forward bilateral relations along the right direction.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the maintenance and enhancement of China-ROK high-level interactions play an important leading role in bilateral relations. China welcomes the ROK Foreign Minister to visit China this month. The two countries need to continuously strengthen an over-all plan for developing bilateral relations in the next stage and discuss expanding cooperation in international and regional affairs. Both sides should deepen practical cooperation and communication in various fields, so as to better benefit the two peoples.

Moon Jae-in congratulated on the successful convening of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Xi Jinping's re-election as General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee. He supported President Xi Jinping's stance on building a community with a shared future for mankind at the 19th CPC National Congress. Moon Jae-in expressed the hope that both sides should make joint efforts to resume bilateral high-level exchanges and communication and cooperation in various fields at an early date. The ROK supports and stands ready to actively participate in the construction of the "Belt and Road". The ROK attaches importance to China's concern on the THAAD issue, and has no intention to harm China's interests of strategic security.

The two heads of state also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula situation. Xi Jinping pointed out that China adheres to realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, safeguarding peace and stability of Peninsula and resolving problems through dialogues and negotiations. China sincerely hopes for the best of the Peninsula, and encourages the ROK to resume contacts and dialogues with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and restart reconciliation and cooperation. China is also willing to maintain communication with the ROK on safeguarding stability, preventing wars, and promoting peace talks regarding the Peninsula issue. Moon Jae-in said that the ROK appreciates China's positive role in the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, stands ready to conduct close communication and coordination with China, and insists on solving the issue in a peaceful manner to maintain peace on the Peninsula.
