Xi Jinping Meets with President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines

On November 11, 2017 local time, President Xi Jinping met with President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Xi Jinping pointed out that bilateral relations have opened a new chapter since President Rodrigo Duterte's visit to China last October. The two countries have actively carried out cooperation and enjoyed healthy and stable development of China-Philippines relations, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples and making important contributions to the regional peace and stability. Good-neighborliness and friendliness are the right direction that China-Philippines relations must insist on, and China is willing to, together with the Philippines, continue grasping bilateral relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective, enhancing political mutual trust, consolidating and deepening cooperation, in a bid to bring more benefits to the two peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed that the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) just concluded last month, which sets forth a goal for China in the future period. China's development needs an external environment with lasting peace and stability. China will stick to the road of peaceful development, as well as insist on achieving development through opening up and win-win cooperation. China will continuously uphold the diplomatic policy with neighboring countries featuring amity, sincerity, mutual benefit and inclusiveness, and build friendship and partnership with neighboring countries to push forward the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. At present, relations between the two countries stand on a new starting point. Both sides should cement high-level exchanges, enhance understanding and trust, as well as strengthen strategic leading, so as to ensure the development of bilateral relations along a right track. The two sides should deepen and expand practical cooperation in infrastructure construction, agriculture, investment and other areas centering on the alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative with the Philippines' development strategy. China is willing to offer assistance to the Philippines on poverty reduction, and continue supporting the effort of the Philippine government in safeguarding national security. Both sides should strengthen exchanges in political parties, parliaments, local area, non-governmental exchanges, cement cooperation in such areas as education, science and technology, culture, health, sports and youths, and mobilize the people's intelligence and power, so as to further consolidate the public foundation of bilateral relations. China will continuously work with ASEAN countries to well maintain peace and stability, as well as development and prosperity in the South China Sea.

Rodrigo Duterte said that Philippines-China relations are of great importance. The Philippines regards China as a sincere friend and is grateful for China's assistance to its economic construction, anti-terrorism and maintenance of the stability. The Philippines devotes to promoting bilateral cooperation in various fields to move forward, and is willing to properly well handle maritime issues through bilateral channels in accordance with consensus reached by the two sides with China.
