Xi Jinping Holds Talks Again with President Vladimir Putin of Russia in St. Petersburg

On June 6, 2019 local time, President Xi Jinping held talks again with President Vladimir Putin of Russia in St. Petersburg.

Vladimir Putin invited Xi Jinping to a cruise tour on the Neva River. Welcoming Xi Jinping to his hometown again, Vladimir Putin introduced to Xi Jinping local customs as well as the buildings on both sides of the river. Xi Jinping said that I was very happy to visit St. Petersburg, President Vladimir Putin's hometown. Featuring the beautiful scenery and strong cultural and artistic atmosphere, St. Petersburg has witnessed a lot of significant historical events and nurtured many outstanding figures, in particular, made huge sacrifices for and important contributions to the victory of the world anti-Fascist war. St. Petersburg is the pride of Russia and the Russian people.

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin together boarded cruiser Aurora that fired the first shot in the October Revolution in 1917, and were briefed on its history. Noting that Aurora cruiser bears unique significance to the Chinese people, Xi Jinping recalled that the October Revolution sent Marxism to China, which played an important role in the birth of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Thereafter, under the leadership of the CPC, the Chinese people, generation after generation, achieved huge success in China's revolution and the construction of the People's Republic of China. The Russian side's preservation of the cruiser has shown its respect for history. Vladimir Putin agreed with Xi Jinping, stressing that history ought to be respected.

The two heads of state talked about the history and current situation of the ancient city along the sightseeing tour, pledging to promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges between China and Russia so as to enhance mutual understanding and friendship. Vladimir Putin welcomed more Chinese tourists to St. Petersburg and Russia at large.

Afterwards, the two heads of state arrived at the Winter Palace for continuous long talks, exchanging views in an in-depth way on the current international situation as well as some major international and regional issues.

Xi Jinping stressed that both China and Russia are at a key historical stage in their pursuit of national development and rejuvenation. Under the current circumstances, the two sides should deepen strategic coordination, not only to safeguard the interests of China and Russia, but also to defend basic international norms and justice as well as world peace, security and stability.

Vladimir Putin said that the more complex and volatile the international situation is, the more Russia and China should consolidate and deepen political mutual trust, boost coordination and cooperation in international affairs, and safeguard the international law and the basic norms governing international relations.
