Xi Jinping Arrives in Rome for a State Visit to the Republic of Italy

On March 21, 2019 local time, President Xi Jinping arrived in Rome by special plane, starting his state visit to the Republic of Italy.

Two Italian fighter jets took off to escort Xi Jinping's special plane as it entered Italy's airspace. At around 6:30 p.m. local time, the special plane arrived at the Fiumicino Airport. When Xi Jinping and his wife Mme. Peng Liyuan stepped out the cabin door, the guard of honor saluted to them. They were warmly welcomed by senior Italian officials including Minister of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies and Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities. Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan walked along the red carpet while the guard of honor was lining up on both sides of the red carpet with eye salute.

On behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, Xi Jinping extended sincere greetings and best wishes to the Italian government and people. Xi Jinping pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy 49 years ago, bilateral relations have withstood the test of time and international vicissitude. Upholding the principle of mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual benefit and win-win results, China and Italy have constantly promoted their friendship and cooperation, setting an example of developing bilateral relations between two countries of different social systems, cultural backgrounds and development stages. The practical cooperation between the two countries has yielded fruitful results, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples. In addition, bilateral cultural and people-to-people exchanges are rich and colorful, and have enhanced mutual understanding and friendship.

Xi Jinping pointed out that I am looking forward to holding talks and meeting with the Italian leaders such as President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to jointly draw the blueprint for the future development of bilateral relations. It is believed that with the concerted efforts of both sides, the China-Italy comprehensive strategic partnership will enjoy a better tomorrow.

Ding Xuexiang, Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi, He Lifeng and other delegation members arrived by the same plane.

H.E. Li Ruiyu, Chinese Ambassador to Italy, also greeted Xi Jinping at the airport.

After concluding the state visit to Italy, Xi Jinping will also pay state visits to Monaco and France.
