Xi Jinping Meets with Vuk Jeremic, Christine Lagarde and Bill Gates

On April 8, 2013, President Xi Jinping met respectively with Vuk Jeremic, president of the 67th Session of the UN general assembly, Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Bill Gates, president of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Boao, Hainan province.

During the meeting with Jeremic, Xi said the UN plays a crucial role in maintaining world peace, adding that more contributions are expected from the organization to promote peaceful development and win-win cooperation worldwide. "As an active power in safeguarding world peace and promoting common development under the purpose and principles of the UN Charter, China will stick to multilateralism and advocate handling relevant issues through dialogue and negotiations as well as promoting dialogue and exchanges among different civilizations," Xi said. China will support the UN in facilitating the development of developing countries and reforming global economic governance to give emerging markets and developing countries a greater representation and say, Xi said.

The UN hopes China will closely cooperate with it in order to maintain world and regional peace and stability, implement the UN Millennium Development Goals and promote balanced and sustainable development of the world, Jeremic said. Jeremic noted he will make more efforts to promote cultural communication between China and other regions in the world.

During his meeting with Lagarde, Xi pointed out that the world economy at present is still undergoing profound adjustment and there are still many uncertain and unstable factors. "All countries should work together in times of difficulty," Xi said. He called on all countries to strengthen coordination on macroeconomic policies in order to sustain growth, maintain stability and promote employment. The president stressed the importance of development issues in order to help developing countries to eliminate poverty and realize sustainable development. Xi also urged focusing on pressing issues facing the world economy, advising relevant countries to strike the proper balance between current and long-term interests as well as national policies and international responsibilities. To boost emerging and developing countries' contributions to global economic recovery and growth, Xi expressed his hope that the IMF will improve its governance structure to increase the representation and say of these countries. Xi said China will continue to work with the IMF to support and promote reform within the organization.

Lagarde introduced her views on the current global economic situation. She said that against a backdrop of volatile economic recovery, all countries and regions should promote economic growth. She added that international coordination and cooperation are also needed. China plays a crucial role in the world economy, as it has maintained rapid growth momentum, Lagarde said. She also said the IMF expects further cooperation with China.

When meeting with Gates, Xi said the cooperation between relevant Chinese departments and the foundation has yielded significant results in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, as well as smoking control, the development of biopharmaceuticals and tuberculosis prevention. "China should stick to the strategy of innovation-driven development to encourage and support innovation," Xi said. He noted China will make joint efforts with the organization to improve human health, eliminate poverty and bring greater benefits to the rest of the world based on the spirit of innovation.

Gates said Xi's recent visit to Africa, which was also his first foreign tour as president, showed China's willingness to facilitate Africa's development. He expressed appreciation for this and said that he has faith in China's efforts to seek greater development through innovation. The foundation attaches high importance to China, Gates said, adding that he hopes to strengthen cooperation with China to aid other countries in the areas of agricultural development, poverty elimination and disease control by tapping their respective advantages.
