General Secretary Xi Jinping Chairs Politburo Standing Committee Meeting

2020/02/12

At a meeting convened on 12 February, the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee heard a briefing from the Central Leading Group on Responding to the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia Outbreak, assessed the current situation of the outbreak and discussed ways to intensify prevention and control efforts. General Secretary Xi Jinping of the CPC Central Committee chaired the meeting and made important remarks.

Xi stressed that as the fight against the epidemic comes to a crucial and most demanding stage, we must not slacken our key efforts in the slightest but rather redouble control efforts in worst-affected or high-risk regions.

The meeting pointed out the importance of addressing the crux of epidemic control by raising hospital admission and cure rates and lowering infection and case fatality rates. It called for efforts to improve treatment for patients, especially those in severe conditions, by pooling the best medical and technological resources, to carry out timely review of diagnostic and therapeutic solutions and apply the effective ones on a bigger scale, and to step up development of medicines and vaccines.

Hubei Province and the city of Wuhan in particular remain the first-order priority in the ongoing response. To address the shortage of hospital beds, medical workers and other medical resources there, more needs to be done to scale up the remodeling of designated hospitals to expand capacity, increase beds for severe cases, and ensure unimpeded channels for the admission and referral of patients. No effort will be spared to save lives. The 19 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions paired up with cities other than Wuhan in Hubei Province must fulfill their assistance responsibilities to the fullest extent possible and down to the last detail.

The meeting noted that in this concluding year for our endeavor to build a moderately prosperous society in all respects and to deliver on the 13th Five-Year Plan, Party committees and governments at all levels must strive to minimize the epidemic's impact, ensure stable economic performance, maintain social harmony and stability, and achieve the goals set by the CPC Central Committee.
