Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng Speaks by Phone with Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Niels Annen of Germany

2020/05/15

On May 14, 2020, Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng spoke by phone with Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Niels Annen of Germany. Both sides exchanged views on epidemic prevention cooperation, China-Germany relations, and China-Europe relations.

Le Yucheng noted, China and Germany have shown their strength of unity and cooperation in the fight against COVID-19. Against the backdrop of regular epidemic prevention and control, China and Germany need to continue to enhance exchanges and communication through phone calls and video conferences, give play to the role of more than 70 dialogue and consultation mechanisms, and make good preparations for important political agendas between China and Germany and between China and Europe. Both countries should take the establishment of a "fast lane" for essential personnel exchanges as an opportunity to create conditions for resuming work and production and resuming economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, and jointly maintain the stability of the industrial and supply chains. Le Yucheng expressed China's readiness to actively carry out cooperation with the German side and firmly support the World Health Organization (WHO), in a bid to jointly safeguard multilateralism and global public health security.

Niels Annen said, Germany and China have rendered support and assistance to each other in the joint fight against the epidemic and carried out cooperation full of mutual trust. Germany and China share similar positions in maintaining and giving play to the key role of the United Nations, WHO and other multilateral institutions. With the global epidemic still spreading, Germany and China, two countries that have made positive progress in the epidemic prevention, should continue to play an exemplary role for international anti-epidemic cooperation. The German side actively supports the practical approach of establishing a "fast lane", which sends a very positive signal and is well received by the economic community.
