China CDC: Avoid Direct Contact with Raw Fish or Meat, and Wash Hands Thoroughly before and after Preparing Food

2020/06/21

On 19 June, the State Council inter-agency task force held a press briefing on a guideline for COVID-19 containment on a regular basis in low-risk areas during the summer months, and answered questions from journalists.

Feng Luzhao, a researcher with China CDC, said that there is currently no evidence of infection through the digestive tract caused by consumption of food, including seafood products. Studies show that COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through short-distance respiratory droplets and indirect contact. Therefore, to minimize potential risks, the following were recommended:

Ø Avoid direct contact with raw fish or meat at the store or market;

Ø Make sure that food is clean and safe during handling, cooking and dining, and wash hands thoroughly before and after preparing food;

Ø Use a separate chopping board for raw meat, and ensure food is fully cooked and drinking water boiled;

Ø Peel fruits before eating;

Ø Use clean cutlery and utensils; a 15-minute steam sterilization is recommended.
