Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office: Central Government to Provide Every Support for Hong Kong's COVID-19 Response

2020/07/28

On 27 July, Spokesperson of the Office of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs of the State Council said in written remarks that the central government is following Hong Kong's recent wave of COVID-19 infections closely and cares deeply about Hong Kong people's health and safety. The central government will give every necessary support to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for its COVID-19 response.

The spokesperson noted that since the new wave of infections started in early July, Hong Kong had reported 1,520 new confirmed cases as of 27 July midnight. In particular, over 100 daily confirmed cases had been reported over the past 6 days, signaling city-wide spreading of the virus. In response to the serious situation, the Hong Kong SAR government acted swiftly to level up containment measures, including enhancing epidemiological investigation, strengthening border control, strictly managing public gatherings and tightening quarantine exemption arrangements. These efforts demonstrated the SAR government's strong sense of responsibility for the well-being of the people.

Given the fast spread of the virus, Hong Kong's testing capacity can no longer meet the demand, and its medical system and quarantine facilities are being overwhelmed. As people across Hong Kong are calling for support from the central government, the SAR government has requested the central government for such support.

The spokesperson stressed that Hong Kong is a family member of the motherland and the central government cares deeply about Hong Kong people's health and safety. Since the start of COVID-19 earlier this year, the relevant central departments and local governments on the mainland, acting on the decisions of the CPC Central Committee, have maintained close communication with the Hong Kong SAR government and provided timely guidance and strong support for the containment work in Hong Kong, including supporting the SAR government's effort to tighten border control, coordinating the supply of masks and other response materials, ensuring the provision of essential goods, and assisting the return of Hong Kong people stranded outside the territory.

After the strike of the latest wave of infections in Hong Kong, the central government has been following closely the evolving situation, continued to provide vigorous support to the SAR, and will provide all necessary support and assistance as requested by the SAR government, especially in ramping up nucleic acid testing capacity and accelerating the building of temporary quarantine and treatment facilities to help the SAR put the virus under control as quickly as possible.

The spokesperson underscored that as COVID-19 spreads in Hong Kong, the top priority should be saving lives and containing the virus. However, it is at this extraordinary time that a small number of people, even some medical workers, have gone out of their way to churn out absurd accusations or even slanders and smears that are based on political bias or driven by political manipulation. Their goal is to obstruct the support for Hong Kong from the relevant central departments and local governments on the mainland. Such acts of pursuing political agenda at the expense of people's life and safety are as despicable as the notorious practice of seeking political "mutual destruction" in Hong Kong, and must be condemned and rejected by all.

The spokesperson stressed that curbing the spread of the virus as quickly as possible through science-based and targeted measures is the No.1 task for Hong Kong now. In this spirit, it is hoped that people across Hong Kong will join hands at this trying time, fully support and collaborate with the containment efforts of the SAR government, and work closely with the relevant central departments and local governments on the mainland to focus on containment work and early restoration of social and economic order against all odds and distractions. We are convinced that with the strong support of the central authorities and the unreserved assistance from the motherland, Hong Kong will secure a resounding victory against the epidemic.
